It was great to see so many parents at our first celebration assembly of the year. Thank you for your continued support. Our Friday assembly is always a lovely whole school occasion, made even more special when the singing sounds as fantastic as it did last week. I am already looking forward to tomorrow’s celebrations! Well done to 3RW and 2H for their excellent attendance last week. We will continue to aim for a whole school attendance target of 96% this year. It would be great if even more pupils than last year enjoyed the recognition for achieving 100% attendance and the special treat that comes with it. Please read our attendance policy so that you are familiar with our expectations and the legislation around requests for time-off during term time.

Please be reminded that pupils are not allowed on the play equipment before and after the school day. Pupils know these rules and we would really appreciate your support in reinforcing this expectation.

We will be launching our new behaviour policy this half-term. We have moved away from the behaviour ‘ladder’ and the ‘blue sky behaviours’ so you will no longer hear pupils saying that they have ‘reached cockerel’ to earn their cockerel card. Each class now has a recognition board where the names of pupils who demonstrate excellence in their behaviour and learning are placed. These pupils are the role models who set the standard for others to follow. In the interim, pupils will continue to receive cockerel card as recognition for their outstanding behaviours and attitude and their names will be placed on the class recognition boards.  The full policy will follow over the next couple of weeks.

Breakfast club is already in full swing this term with many of our pupils and their families accessing this fantastic provision throughout the week.  Mrs Stanley is delighted by how many of our new reception pupils are regularly attending and how well our older pupils are making them feel welcome. If you haven’t already visited, we would love you to come and experience breakfast club for yourselves. Open from 7.30am every morning, it is a great way for your child to start their day. Please contact Mrs Stanley or the school office for more information. Next Friday, Mrs Stanley is hosting a very special coffee morning during breakfast club, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. We would love to see you there!

Hopefully, your children are busy reading even more books than usual and collecting sponsors for their Readathon. Please take the time to share some books with your child and hear them read as often as possible to encourage them to complete as many books as they can. This is a great way for your children to practise their reading as well as to raise money for a good cause. There are also some great prizes to be won!

Please be reminded that our monthly book swap and uniform sale takes place tomorrow afternoon in the mobile classroom. Send your children in with any books that they no longer read so that they can choose some new titles to take home and enjoy. Book donations are always welcome! Nearly new uniform will also be available for you to stock up on spare trousers, skirts and jumpers.

Many of you and your children will have noticed that Mr Cropper has not been seen around school this term.  He had been deliberating about relocating for some time and confirmed his decision to move back to Somerset at the beginning of the summer holidays. I am sure you will join me in wishing Mr Cropper the best of luck for the future and to thank him for his hard work and commitment to Bowmansgreen.

Don’t forget to visit our school website and download our school app to keep up to date with key information, news and events involving our school community. This half term’s Home Learning grids are now available.

Welcome back!

I hope that you all enjoyed a restful and happy summer holiday. Your children have returned to school ready and excited to learn in their new classes and have settled back into school with positive attitudes.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new reception pupils to Bowmansgreen. They spent their first full morning in their new classes, having great fun exploring and enjoying their new classrooms and learning environment. The reception staff team were impressed by how well they all settled in and look forward to welcoming them again tomorrow.

During this morning’s assembly, pupils were reminded of our school rules and values.

School Rules: Be kind, be safe, be respectful

School Values:

Autumn 1

Kindness

Spring 1

Friendship

Summer 1

Truth and Honesty

Autumn 2

Respect

Spring 2

Courage and Determination

Summer 2

Trust

All staff will be looking out for pupils going over and above – demonstrating excellent behaviour and conduct and consistently displaying our school rules. These expectations will be reflected and reinforced in our new behaviour policy which will be introduced to parents this half term.

Please can we remind parents to ensure that all items of their child’s school uniform are named. Pupils looked really smart and ready to learn today. To ensure that this continues throughout the year, we need to help pupils take responsibility for their appearance and equipment and they can only do this if all of their belongings are named so that they can find them easily if they misplace them.  Each class has a fabric marker which they will ask pupils to use to label any unnamed items next week.

Don’t forget to take a look at the calendar on the school website to keep up to date with the activities and events taking place this half term. These include our monthly book swap event, a Macmillan Coffee Morning, our first curriculum evening of the year, a FOBS disco and our Harvest Festival celebration. There is lots to look forward to and get involved in.

It really is a pleasure to be back to school with our fantastic pupils who are already working hard and doing themselves proud. I am sure that this year will be another successful one at Bowmansgreen and look forward to working closely with you all to ensure that our school continues to go from strength to strength.

This morning, our final celebration assembly of the year took place. As always, family and friends joined us to celebrate pupils who have behaved and achieved above and beyond.  It was fantastic to be able to recognise our super authors, readers, mathematicians and gymnasts. We were also able to congratulate Hudson for achieving his black belt in karate – an amazing achievement for a boy of 10. Well done, Hudson!

Celebration assembly was also an opportunity to say thank you and goodbye to members of staff who will be leaving Bowmansgreen this term. As many of you know, the Bowmansgreen Primary Support Base (PSB) will be closing next week. This closure brings about change for the pupils who are currently on-roll in its class as well as the staff who work there. Mrs De’ath has joined the Bowmansgreen staff team, working as a teaching assistant.  Ms Robson, Mrs Apicella and Mrs Plummer will be leaving us for adventures new. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their hard work and dedication to the pupils and families of St Albans and Bowmansgreen. We will miss them all very much and wish them well and much happiness for the future.

I would like to inform parents that Miss Corbett will also be leaving next week after just one year at Bowmansgreen, to work at a school where her son will be attending nursery. I know you will join me in wishing her well and good luck for the future.

This week, we also celebrated pupils across the school who achieved 100% attendance this year. Twenty seven pupils from reception to Year 6 went bowling as a special treat to congratulate them on being at school every day, for the whole year. Well done for this fantastic achievement, children! I look forward to being able to take even more pupils on a surprise day out, next year.

The Department for Education (DfE) has now published its final statutory guidance about how Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education should be implemented in all schools across England by 2020. We will be involving parents in the process of developing our new school policy by providing information as well as seeking opinions about various aspects of the content and materials that we will be using.  Please read this DfE parent guide as an initial overview about how Relationships and Health education will be taught. I have also included a link to an NSPCC briefing document that provides a summary and further references that parents might find useful.

Year 6 should be very proud of themselves for their fantastic end of year performances. They sang, danced and acted their way through the two shows and demonstrated just what a talented year group they are. Thank you to all of the staff involved in making the show such a success.

This afternoon, Year 3 and Eva performed a ukulele concert to their parents and the rest of the school. Year 3 were joined by Eva and Oscar, who performed guitar solos, to show their parents what they have been learning as part of their weekly music lessons.  Well done musicians, you sounded great! Thank you to Antony Pigram for organising this concert.

See you after the weekend, where your children will receive their end of year reports and we will say goodbye and good luck to our wonderful Year 6 as they move on to their secondary schools.

Thank you to everyone who attended our final curriculum evening of the year. The Bowmansgreen art gallery was open for viewing with art work from across the school on display. Pupils have worked really hard on their art activities this half-term and we hope that you were impressed by their final pieces.

Yesterday was also an opportunity for parents in KS1 and KS2 to meet their child’s new class teacher and we hope that you took the opportunity to say ‘hello.’ Between now and the end of term, we will ensure that pupils receive a supportive transition towards their new classes. We recognise that some pupils will benefit from additional opportunities to meet their new teachers and familiarise themselves with their new classrooms and this will be built in to the remainder of this term.

The Healthforkids website is a new resource for Hertfordshire families that covers health-related subjects for children aged 4-11 years. It contains articles, advice and signposts to services and other resources in the Parents/Carers section whilst the children’s section includes games, activities and information about healthy minds and bodies, bereavement, how to access help and thinking about feelings.  https://www.healthforkids.co.uk/

BeeZee Families is another resource being recommended by our school nursing team. BeeZee Families is a healthy lifestyles programme which is free for 5-15 year olds and their families living in Hertfordshire.  The programme is led by nutritionists and behaviour change experts and focuses on making changes towards a healthier lifestyle.

Tomorrow, the Bowman music festival takes place. Don’t panic if you haven’t already purchased a ticket –  there is still the opportunity to purchase on the gate. It promises to be a great family event, with food, music and lots to keep the whole family entertained. It would be lovely to see you there in support of this event which will help raise money for our school.

Enjoy your weekend.

What a busy week it has been at Bowmansgreen!

Friday’s celebration assembly is always a highlight of my week as it is a time to come together as a whole school to celebrate the behaviour and achievements of our wonderful pupils. This week, I was lucky enough to have Maisie by my side, to help me announce the names of pupils who were being celebrated this morning. Maisie did a fantastic job of  presenting the cockerel cards and trophies. Thank you Maisie – you are a star!

Parents who joined us for this morning’s celebration assembly were able to hear the first performance of our new school song.  Mrs Flatt has been working with Year 5, during their music lessons, to write the lyrics and create a school song that represents our ethos, values and school life at Bowmansgreen. Thank you Mrs Flatt and Year 5 – you have done a super job. Our school song sounds amazing!

Maisie had earned the opportunity to help me with my assembly duties as a result of her bid in the staff auction at the summer fair. Other auction winners include Lyra who, with her guests, joined Miss Golding for lunch today and Ella and Kiera who have been busy baking scones with Mrs Stanley.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support their children and enjoy sports day with us on Wednesday. It was a great day and pupils in all year groups had fun taking part. Congratulations to Morpurgo House for being our winning sports day team.

Congratulations to Keira and Lucy for getting through to the final of the Rotary Club’s Junior Bake Off. The final takes place at Sandringham School on July 17th. Good luck girls!

Next week, pupils will find out who their teachers are for next year. There will be an opportunity for parents to meet the new class teachers next Thursday, during our final curriculum evening of the year. We hope to see you all there!

Enjoy your weekend.

Key Stage One had a great start to their week with their sponsored Daily Mile, helping to raise money for Herts Vision Loss.

Again, we were lucky with the weather and delighted that parents and other family members were able to join us for this event.

Thank you to the families who have already sent in their sponsor money. We are hoping to present the money raised to Herts Vision Loss next week so please send in any outstanding sponsor money by Monday.

The Summer Reading Challenge will take place again this year in libraries across Hertfordshire.  Children can sign up at our local library and then read six library books of their choice to complete the Challenge. It’s FREE to take part and will help keep your children busy and practise their reading skills during the holiday.        https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/

This morning, our September 2019 reception children visited Bowmansgreen for their second ‘play and stay.’ Mrs Stanley prepared a tasty breakfast for them and their parents and then they spent time in their new classroom, getting to know the staff who will be working with them in September. They were very well looked after by some of our current reception children who did a fantastic job of making them feel welcome, sharing their equipment and helping them try out new activities and experiences. Children, you really did yourselves proud with how kind, responsible and supportive you were towards the new class.  Thank you to all of the staff, visitors and children who helped to make this morning so successful. I look forward to working closely with our new parents and children in September.

As you know, on Saturday July 13th, the Bowman Music Festival is taking place at Bowmansgreen. With only two weeks to go and to help ensure that FOBS can finalise planning for the event, a deadline of this Sunday evening has been decided for all ticket purchases. Please therefore purchase your tickets via the link below so that numbers can be guaranteed, to avoid the event being cancelled.          https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-bowman-tickets-60211311654

Enjoy the weekend weather!

This afternoon, 3S were learning about the Summer Solstice. In the UK – and the rest of the northern hemisphere – today is the summer solstice which means that it is the longest day of the year. I wonder what else 3S can remember about the Summer Solstice?

We are lucky to have such beautiful grounds at Bowmansgreen which pupils make good use of , not just at play times and for PE but also during their eco-days. Today, I joined Mrs Stanley, Theo, Dantae and Freddy in the wildlife area as they released some baby frogs into our pond. They also had a go at pond dipping and learnt to recognise when a baby frog can breathe out of the water.

Tomorrow, some of our Y2 and Y4 pupils will be performing in a concert at the Radlett Centre as part of the Radlett Festival of Music. Pupils have been busy rehearsing with Mrs Street for their performances which include songs from The Greatest Showman, Mary Poppins and Joseph. Good luck children and have lots of fun. I know you will be amazing!

The KS2 sponsored Daily Mile took place this morning. Pupils and staff ran or walked the route to raise money for Herts Vision Loss. It was lovely to see some of our parents join their children for this activity.

Next Monday, it’s the turn of KS1 and EYFS!

We were really lucky with the weather which helped to make the day such a great family day out. Fantastic dancing by Excel Performing Arts and super singing by the school choir and Y2 and Y4 singers  – what a talented school community we are!
A special thank you to Nicola and the FOBS committee for organising this event.
