Welcome back after the half -term break!

Last half-term saw pupils in Year 2 and Year 6 sit their SATS – the compulsory end of Key Stage national curriculum assessments. Pupils worked hard in preparation and during each test period  and we are extremely proud of how well they managed. Although we do our best to gently prepare pupils for the test content and conditions, we appreciate that it can sometimes feel very daunting and different to normal school life and learning, especially for pupils in Year 6. You may have seen the press coverage about the Year 6 reading paper and the significant concerns expressed by teachers across the country about its level of difficulty and notable difference to previous papers. It is fair to say that it was extremely challenging! Our wonderful pupils gave it everything and handled this and the other papers brilliantly – they really did themselves proud.

After nearly thirteen years at Bowmansgreen, Rebecca Robertson has left her role as the school’s Business Manager. As a member of the school’s leadership team, Mrs Robertson has worked closely with many members of staff, parents and carers, governors and outside agencies, advising on and managing the school’s admin and finances. It has been a pleasure to work alongside her and I would like to thank her for the hard work and commitment she has shown our school community over the years. I am sure you will join me in wishing Mrs Robertson the best of luck and happiness for the future as she embarks upon a new role in a local academy trust.

A very warm welcome to Mrs McGrath who joined our office team, this week. She will be working closely with Mrs Clark and Miss Mates, liaising with families across the school. If you have not already met or spoken with her, please do pop in and say ‘hello.’

Next week, we will begin an audit of Blue Badges to help us understand their prevalence across our school community and to inform decisions about the use of the staff car park by families and visitors. As previously mentioned, we can no longer safely meet the demand for the two disabled parking bays in our staff car park. Parents and carers can therefore no longer drive into the car park unless in exceptional circumstances. Due to the number of families wanting to use the staff car park, it seems that having a Blue Badge is no longer exceptional and the situation is unsafe and unsustainable. If you hold a Blue Badge, we will be asking you to complete a short questionnaire so that we can hopefully find a safe and fair way forward.

Are you registered with the Hertfordshire Family Centre Service? The Hertfordshire Family Centre Service provides services to children and young people and includes Family
Support Services, Health Visiting and School Nursing. A short survey has been developed to understand your experiences of the current service and the support families with young children in Hertfordshire require. Family Centre Service parent feeedback questionnaire.

Last night was disco night! Thank you to FOBS for organising another successful disco event for Bowmansgreen pupils. Both discos were great fun and very well attended. It was lovely to see pupils having such a good time together. Thank you also to the parents, carers and staff who helped out on the night – it couldn’t happen without you!

Stay safe in the sun! Enjoy your weekend.

Coronation Celebration

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Coronation celebration yesterday. It was a lovely school community occasion and a great start to the Coronation bank holiday weekend.

Amazingly, the weather held off to ensure that we could be outside, enjoying our time together.

Thank you to Mr Bronstein and the Year 3 trumpeters who performed their fanfares and New King song. You were fantastic!

Thank you also to the FOBS committee and parent and carer volunteers, for being on-hand all afternoon, organising the raffle and refreshments; refereeing the football; picking up litter; helping to clear away and generally mucking-in all afternoon.

Congratulations to the Bailey family who have a new addition to their family – a lovable teddy bear called Louis – who they successfully named, as raffle prize winners.

We really do have an amazing school community and we appreciate the ongoing support and involvement of our families at events like this, that bring us all together.

Enjoy the Coronation and the rest of your long weekend.

Last Saturday, Circus Sensible came to Bowmansgreen. By all accounts, it was a fantastic day and an occasion to remember. Comments from children, parents and carers reflect how much fun was had on the day. A huge thank you to Angela Duce and the FOBS committee for organising this event and experience for the school community.

The school is lucky to have such an active and well supported FOBS committee and we really appreciate the hard work and commitment that goes into organising such events. Thank you also to the families that offer help and turn out to support these events – it couldn’t be done without you. The fundraising that is generated by FOBS really makes a difference and for which we are very grateful.

The summer term Herts for Learning (HFL) Education online safety newsletter includes a range of guidance, news, links and updates about online safety. This edition features reviews and information about:

    • Moving up to secondary school
    • WhatsApp and BeReal
    • What is YouTube Go Live Together?
    • Dealing with safety concerns

We expect pupils to wear full uniform every day, including footwear and PE kit. Our school uniform policy gives the flexibility of logo and non-logo items but with clear expectations about types of items and colours. Footwear is expected to be plain black shoes or trainers – any visible logos are also expected to be black. Pupils are regularly reminded about appropriate uniform but we rely on parent and carer support and reinforcement to ensure that our policy is adhered to.

At the end of May, we will be holding nearly new uniform ‘sales’ to enable families to stock up on uniform items for free. Dates to follow.

Please ensure that your child does not use the playground equipment before or after school. As staff are not on hand to supervise this play, we ask that you do not allow your child on any of the equipment pieces. This request is to avoid any accidents before or after the school day, when the playgrounds are not monitored or supervised in the same was as during the school day, when your children are in our care. It can be awkward for staff to intervene and speak directly to pupils they see whilst they are in your care but they are following our policies and health and safety guidance so please do not be offended if a member of staff asks your child to come off the equipment.

Next Friday is our Coronation celebration, with pupils encouraged to wear red, white and blue or dress as a king or queen for the day. We look forward to families joining us between 2 – 4pm to get the Coronation bank holiday weekend off to a great start.

Harrison (Y6) was acknowledged in yesterday’s celebration assembly by Mr Sanders, for his contributions to the Bowmansgreen football team and also for his participation and success in his footballing achievements outside of school. To learn that Harrison is one of only 24 players across the district to be part of the St Albans Primary Schools Representative Squad, is certainly something to celebrate. Congratulations, Harrison – what a fantastic achievement! You should be very proud of yourself as we all are of you.

Enjoy your bank holiday weekend.

Eid Mubarak!

Many families within our school community are celebrating Eid. We hope that you enjoy your festivities and family celebrations, during the next few days.

Thank you, if you have kindly responded to Mrs Stanley’s recent request for donations of plants or seeds. Any donations of the following would be much appreciated, to help pupils restore the beds and planters around school and learn to grow their own flowers, fruit and vegetables:
-bags of compost/grow bags
-strawberry plants
-seeds (lettuce, radish, tomato, runner bean, beetroot, rainbow chard, carrot, parsnip, pumpkin, courgette, sunflower, cornflower, meadow/country wild flower… or any other favourite flowers!)

This half-term’s school values are truth and honesty. Monday’s assembly explored the importance of these values and throughout the half-term, staff will be looking out for pupils who are excellent role models in demonstrating these values.

On Wednesday, photographers were at Bowmansgreen to take class photos. They will return later this term to take photos of our school teams and House Captains.

Thank you to the many families who helped create an enormous pile of donations as part of yesterday’s FOBS Bag2School fundraiser. Thank you for supporting this event and joining Mrs Stanley for a cup of coffee, to help raise money for our school.

Recent FOBS fundraising has helped purchase new playground equipment for each Key Stage. The static gym equipment is proving very popular and great fun for pupils across the school. We were able to add some FOBS fundraising to a generous donation from a local resident and former pupil. Thank you everyone!

The FOBS committee are hard at it again today, busy setting up for today’s Circus Sensible at Bowmansgreen. We hope to see lots of families at the workshops and/or shows, joining in the fun and helping to raise more valuable funds to benefit our pupils.

Throughout the week, pupils in Year 5 took part in Bikeability training, learning how to ride their bikes safely on the road. Miss Allen was very proud to have received some extremely positive feedback from the instructors about how supportive and caring pupils were towards each other, especially when individual pupils lacked confidence when facing a new challenge. Well done, children. You should be very proud of yourselves.

After seven and a half-years at Bowmansgreen, yesterday Mrs Rea worked her final day at Bowmansgreen. She will be taking up a new job locally and therefore expects to still see lots of families around in the local community. Pupils said goodbye to Mrs Rea in yesterday’s celebration assembly and she received a steady stream of cards and flowers throughout the day. I am sure that you will join me in thanking her for her hard work and commitment to Bowmansgreen over the years and wish her the best of luck for the future.

Good luck to the Year 5 boys football team, currently taking part in the six-a-side finals this morning!

Enjoy your weekend.

It was lovely to meet with school councillors again this week, to discuss a range of issues and projects. Lydia, Adam and Aidan shared feedback and discussed their ideas for promoting healthy, breaktime snacks. Next term, the school council is meeting with Herts Catering Limited (HCL) to discuss reducing dining hall waste and meal choices.

First Steps ED are offering four week ‘Skills for Carers’ workshops, which are full of practical tips, scenarios and case studies to help support a loved one with an eating disorder. Sessions are delivered online (via Zoom) over four weeks. The courses are free of charge. Visit the First Steps ED website or contact info@firststepsed.co.uk for more information.

Spaces for the Easter HAPpy camps are going fast! Families who are eligible and are in receipt of benefits-related free school meals should already have their booking code. Any previous codes will not be recognised on the booking system so a new one for Easter is required. The popular HAPpy programme is funded by Hertfordshire County Council via the government’s Holiday Activity and Food programme and coordinated by Herts Sports Partnership and the Hertfordshire Community Foundation. It is running more than 200 activity camps from 3rd  April – 14th April 2023 (not bank holidays). The activity camps give eligible children and young people a chance to have fun, meet friends, learn new skills and enjoy nutritious food.

The Sandbox is a new online, mental health digital advice and guidance service for 10-25 year olds. The Sandbox is an NHS funded service to support children and young people in Hertfordshire with their mental health and wellbeing. This new free service launches on 1st April 2023 and offers a website with access to games, worksheets, group chats and online events for children, young people, their parents/carers, teachers and other professionals. The Sandbox provides access to internet enabled Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (iCBT), or one-to-one support from professional therapists by text, phone, online chat or video call, based on a triage of the child or young person’s needs. Signing up is easy and does not require a referral from a professional.

Hertfordshire Mind Network’s With YOUth Digital Wellbeing Service for 5-18s is another helpful resource to support children’s mental health and wellbeing.

There is lots to look forward to after the holiday, with new topics and exciting books to explore; year group trips for some; book swaps; a circus (April 22nd); a Coronation picnic (Friday 5th May, 2pm); and maybe a few SATS tests thrown in for Y2 and Y6 for good measure!

I hope that you enjoy the Easter break…. and don’t get too wet in the April showers!

Please be reminded that pupils return to school on Monday 17th April – there is no INSET day.

A small request from Mrs Stanley

After Easter, we are hoping to weed and set our vegetable beds and planters, around school. We would like to grow salad and root vegetables, flowers and sunflowers.

We would really appreciate donations of:

  • bags of compost/grow bags
  • strawberry plants
  • seeds (lettuce, radish, tomato, runner bean, beetroot, rainbow chard, carrot, parsnip, pumpkin, courgette, sunflower, cornflower, meadow/country wild flower… or any other favourite flowers!)

Any donations would be greatly received – please send into school during the first week back, after the Easter holiday.

Thank you for your support,

Mrs Stanley

It has been a very busy few weeks at Bowmansgreen!

Last Friday, FOBS held a Mothers’ Day sale. Pupils excitedly browsed and selected their gifts – leaving the tables almost completely bare! Thank you to FOBS for organising this successful event, helping to raise much needed funds for our school. We hope that your Mothers’ Day was made even more special by the extra little surprise you may have received!

Pupils who eat school meals have been enjoying taking part in this year’s Eat Them To Defeat Them campaign which aims to encourage children to eat more vegetables. Pupils have had fun trying something new; increasing the number of portions they eat throughout the week; and being surprised to find out about the vegetables hiding inside some of the very tasty desserts!

If your child is entitled to free school meals (either because they are in EYFS or KS1 or they are eligible due to family, income-related benefits) I would encourage you to take up the offer. You can choose for your child to eat school meals as regularly or infrequently as you would like – some children prefer to switch between packed lunch and school dinners throughout the week. If your family is eligible, choosing free school meals for your child makes sense financially and ensures that your child receives a nutritious meal, daily.

The cost of living crisis is affecting us all, including in terms of rising food prices. Regrettably, as a direct result of these and other rising costs, the price of school meals will go up after Easter – you will receive a letter on Monday detailing the increase. As above, if you think that your child is eligible for free school meals or you have not yet taken up their entitlement, please check online or ask at the school office.

Since the last blog, we have held two curriculum evenings, focusing on the subjects of English and science. As always, it is lovely to welcome families into school and share aspects of the curriculum with you. Pupils are always so proud to show you their learning and it is an important experience and skill for them, to discuss and explain what they have been busy learning at school. Thank you to Mrs Campbell and Miss Allen for organising these two events. Our next curriculum evening takes place on 13th July.

Please be reminded to adhere to the parking restrictions around school. The restrictions were long fought for to help ensure the safety of our school community and local residents. We expect an increased volume of school traffic during inclement weather but there have been several days recently where the parking has been inconsiderate and dangerous for our families and neighbours. The restrictions have made a significant difference to the flow of traffic and safety of drivers, pedestrians and residents which we cannot afford to compromise.

Families with blue parking badges have been able to use the disabled parking spaces within the staff car park. The significant rise in the number of families with blue badges, however, means that we can no longer safely accommodate the number of cars, with the badges, into the car park alongside staff vehicles – there are often too many cars for the number of spaces available which has created a few dangerous obstructions and very stressful situations. The situation was not sustainable before our building work began and it has since intensified. We are carrying out a review and risk assessment to ascertain the level of need for these spaces and decide upon a criteria and conditions for the use of these spaces by families and visitors. Moving forward and as part of the risk assessment, if both disabled parking spaces are in use, families with blue badges will be informed of this at the gate and asked to park out on the road. This decision is to help ensure the safety of both drivers and pedestrians and to minimise dangerous obstructions and manoeuvres on-site. Blue badge holders are able to park on both single and double yellow lines. Details of this review and risk assessment, to follow.

The Islamic holy month of Ramadan began on Wednesday. Every year, some of our older pupils fast during Ramadan – sometimes for part or all of this time. If your child chooses to fast, please let the school office know so that we are aware and can be mindful and accommodating of their decision, especially in terms of lunchtime and physical activities.

Some very happy news to share…. Congratulations to Mrs Davis who is now a very proud mummy to her baby son. Both mother and baby have been doing well and we look forward to seeing them both soon.

Please be reminded that Monday 8th May, 2023 will be a national bank holiday, in celebration of the Coronation of King Charles lll. We will be holding our own celebration event on Friday 5th May, with families welcome from 2pm. More details to follow.

Enjoy your weekend.

It has certainly been a busy couple of weeks! Story cafes, cycling events and discos are amongst the many activities that pupils have recently taken part in, at Bowmansgreen.

Thank you to the family members of pupils in EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2 who were able to join us for their child’s story café. It was lovely to see so many parents and carers, sharing a story and activity with their child and seeing aspects of our new phonics programme, in action. Pupils were very excited and (apart from some very teary goodbyes!) thoroughly enjoyed hosting family members in their classrooms. We look forward to inviting you to our next story cafés, in the summer term.

Last Monday, pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 took part in a fully funded cycling event. The purpose of the session was to check the safety of their bikes, to ensure that they are roadworthy and  pupils can ride safely, with confidence. Pupils were given bikes and helmets, if they had outgrown or no longer owned their own. It was a valuable event and great preparation for the Bikeability course which will take place later in the year.

This week is Children’s Mental Health week. The theme for this year’s campaign is ‘Let’s Connect.’ During yesterday’s assembly, pupils considered what it means to connect with others and who they connect with. They also thought about what it might feel like for people who do not feel connected or who are lonely. Pupils will be taking part in activities as part of this campaign, throughout the week.

Today is Safer Internet Day. Miss Golding launched the 2023 campaign with pupils during this morning’s assembly, which is based around the theme ‘Want to talk about it? Making space for conversations about life online’. There are lots of resources for schools and families (select your preferred language) to mark the day and to support our roles in creating and maintaining a safe, online world for our children.

Last Friday was disco time at Bowmansgreen! Pupils across the school enjoyed their second disco of the year, having lots of fun, singing, dancing and spending valuable social time with their friends. Thank you to the FOBS committee for organising this event to help raise much needed funds for our school.

Take a look at the DSPL7 website, for information and resources for families in St Albans, including courses for parents and carers.

A belated thank you to a very generous parent at RedAlert PT who kindly donated some new netball bibs to Bowmansgreen. Our netballers have been training hard and taking part in matches with local schools, putting their new bibs to good use. Thank you very much!

This Thursday, our next Curriculum Evening takes place with English as the focus subject. Come along to share in your child’s learning, from 3.05pm – 4pm and 6-7pm, in the school hall. We look forward to seeing you there!

Over the last few weeks, we have been learning about doctors, paramedics, and nurses. The children have enjoyed playing doctors in our role play area and helping their patients feel better.

We have created different emergency vehicles and people who help us, for our classroom display.

Thanks for all your support this half term. Your children have been working very hard.

We look forward to our new topic and learning all about transport, next half term.
