Sports News from Mr Sanders

The Boys B team hosted Skyswood in the B league on Thursday in their first game of 2018. With the pitch in superb condition, especially after the recent rain, it was perfect for passing football. The Bowmansgreen lads started the game superbly and looked to be in total control, as Archie (the goal keeper) was a spectator for the first 10 minutes, only being called into action once in the opening 15 minutes. With Owen and Hugo solid defensively and the work rate of Zak, Adam and Evan plus the pace of Youcef and Tobi up front, it was a superb game to watch for Bowmansgreen.
Youcef got in behind the Skyswood defence more than once and only recovering tackles prevented him getting his shots away. It was one of these runs that created the clearest opportunity, as he was fouled in the penalty area and the penalty was given. The opening goal wasn’t to be, as Owen’s shot was saved smartly by the keeper. The score at the half time break was still 0-0 and the team went back out full of hope and confidence.
That changed after 5 minutes as Skyswood scored 3 goals in 3 minutes and that changed the complexion of the game. Try as they might, the goal that Bowmansgreen deserved just wouldn’t come as the keeper kept several shots at bay and goalmouth scrambles were also cleared without any luck.
Final score Bowmansgreen 0-3 Skyswood
Squad Archie, Owen, Hugo. Adam, Zak, Evan, Youcef & Tobi.

Early Years News from Miss Robbins – 26.01.18

This week
We have completed our work on Space. We started our week with the ‘Space to Earth’ workshops which involved the children running and pedalling static bikes. They had great fun and put in a tremendous effort. We have read the story ‘Q Pootle 5’ by Nick Butterworth focusing on the characters and setting and using wow words to describe the movement and sounds of a spaceship. In maths we learnt about adding and breaking up numbers into different groups eg – 5 into groups of 2 and 3, 1 and 4 etc. We’ve made planets using papier-mâché.
Next week
For the next two weeks we will be learning about being healthy. We will be reading the story ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’ by Vivian French. We will be looking at different vegetables and using descriptive words to talk about them. We may taste some too! In maths we will be learning about different types of patterns…tessellating, repeating, symmetrical, using all sorts of materials and objects to make them.
P.E .
As the children are now changing for P.E. at school please bring their bags in Monday morning and leave them at school for the week. There may be other days during the week when we need to use their kits.
Celebration Assembly
We are now attending celebration assembly every Friday at 9am. All parents are welcome to attend each week. If your child is awarded a cockerel card they will be given this in assembly and you will receive a text to let you know so that you can try to attend that week. Each class teacher also gives a ‘special mention’ in this assembly to one child from their class that has done something fantastic that week. This is decided by the teacher on Friday, before assembly, so unfortunately we are unable to let you know if they are going to receive this certificate.
Reading Registration
We currently hold 2 reading mornings each week on Tuesday and Friday. It has been lovely having so many parents stay to do this and share the enjoyment of reading. We are now going to change the Tuesday session to a ‘Maths games registration’ and instead of books we will put out a variety of fun maths games/activities to do with the children. If you can stay to play with the children it would be great. The timing will stay the same. Thursday will still be ‘Reading Registration’.

Sports News from Mr Sanders – 19.01.18

The Boys A team travelled to play a strong Oakwood team yesterday which included Mr Gowler’s cousin, Josh and Mrs Robertson’s son George.
The game was very even early on as both defences were on top, with plenty of endeavour and commitment shown by both sides. Alfie, Isa and Freddie contained the lively Oakwood forwards while James’ movement in attacking positions kept the Oakwood defenders occupied while Tommy and Ollie looked to be creative. Bowmansgreen took the lead when Ollie delivered a cross from the left hand side, and even though it had a slight deflection, Ollie claimed the goal as the cross was sneaking in at the far post. Several chances followed for both teams but as earlier, the defences held firm to keep the score 1-0 as half time approached, and Jack had come on for Ollie.
The 2nd half continued in much the same vein as the game flowed from one end to the other. Taye was alert as Oakwood looked to equalise. They eventually did with seven minutes to go. It was a breakaway attack from a Bowmansgreen corner and finished well. This seemed to spur the Bowmansgreen team on and towards the end of the game, Alfie nearly won the game as his shot clipped the post and went away for a goal kick. Taye then produced a decent save with a minute to go and keep the scores level and a score line which reflected the match.
Oakwood 1-1 Bowmansgreen
Squad – Taye, Alfie, Isa, Freddie, Tommy (c), Ollie, James, Jack.

Environmental Workshops from Ruby Raut

This week we had the Food Waste Ninja back to our school where she talked about the environmental impact of food waste. The school learned about the process of food, from growing to throwing and its environmental impact.
It takes a lot of energy, water, effort, love, resources and money to get food to our tables. Globally, too much food is wasted. Some easy steps to reduce food waste at home:

  • Buying only what we can eat
  • Storing the food properly
  • Eating our leftovers

Some easy steps to reduce food waste at school:

  • Asking for a smaller portion
  • Choosing the option of food we like to eat
  • We can always snack later on the food that is left in our packed lunch

Most importantly it was great to see so many ninjas on board at Bowmansgreen to reduce food waste.
“I was shocked to see how much water is used to make one burger, 2,200litres” – Year 5 student.
We are looking forward to welcoming Ruby back next term to hear more about the Food Ninjas.

Parent Workshops

Next week’s workshop is about our Sex and Relationships policy and the PSHE Curriculum. If you have any questions or concerns about what your children will be learning, this is a perfect opportunity for you to meet the teachers involved in its implementation at our school.
Our workshops have been a great success, and we’re looking forward to providing more help, support and information in 2018. Thank you to everyone who has attended so far. If you haven’t already, please do come along. You’ll get a warm welcome, and we’re always happy to see new faces. The workshops are a great opportunity to meet other parents, and learn more about what’s available for you and your family, from school and the outside companies we work with. There’s plenty of free tea and biscuits, and toys to entertain pre-school age siblings. Our Nearly New uniform shop will be running at the same time – it’s a great way to save money on uniform.
This term’s parent workshops take place on the dates shown below between 9.00am and 10am. All parents are welcome and are encouraged to come along if you can.
Tuesday 23rd January – Relationships and Sex Education
Tuesday 6th February – English (Grammar & Punctuation)
Tuesday 20th February – NSPCC – Child Protection
Tuesday 27th February – First Aid for Parents (If you have booked online)
Tuesday 13th March – Inspiring Girls

Headteacher’s Message – 19.01.18

This week, we welcomed two new members of the school community to Bowmansgreen. Cotton and Socks (our two newly adopted rabbits) have settled into their new home. Pupils have shown them lots of love and attention and have been helping them to get used to their new surroundings.
Please be reminded that our next parent workshop takes place on Tuesday morning at 9am with the focus on Relationships and Sex Education. Please see the section about Parent Workshops on the next page.
Forest School at Bowmansgreen has proved to be a very popular and much enjoyed part of our curriculum. Pupils who have taken part so far have had fun learning and working together around the school site and Mrs Stanley has been really impressed with the positive attitudes, resilience and great team-work that pupils have shown. Next term, Mrs Stanley will be leading a parent workshop focused on Forest School so that parents can find out more about this part of our curriculum. When your child takes part in Forest School, please ensure that they wear warm layers, hardwearing clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty and sturdy outdoor shoes or boots. They will get messy!
On Monday, pupils will be taking part in The View from Space to Earth event – a duathlon run by the Triathlon trust. For more information about what your children will be involved in, please follow the link below. www.triathlontrust.org/news/theview-from-space-to-earth_158
I have been really inspired by two of our KS2 pupils this week. Thomas (4C) will be taking part in Macmillan’s ‘Brave the Shave’ and Eva (4C) is currently in the process of swimming the length of the English Channel (not in one go!) to raise money for Wateraid. In Monday’s assembly, they were able to explain to the whole school what their sponsored challenges will involve and their reasons for supporting their chosen charities.
Have a lovely weekend.
