EYFS Blog

Last week was really exciting in Reception. We have begun to learn about our new topic – Dinosaurs. The children spent last week transforming our classroom and watching videos of the volcanic eruption in Spain, to inspire us when creating our own volcanoes.

They have worked together to create a fantastic Dinosaur book corner, complete with different types of dinosaurs and volcanoes. The children spent a long time creating these, painting them and hanging them up. You can find endless dinosaur books in our book corner; stories, non-fiction and magazines. If you look closely, you will see the dinosaurs have slowly started to appear in other places too. Even the playdough and the writing areas haven’t been able to escape the dinosaurs!

Outside, the children have been trying to rescue dinosaurs that have been frozen in ice and have been building dinosaur worlds on the top of our little hill.

We have lots of exciting things planned to keep the children busy, inspired and interested during this topic and we hope that they enjoy it as much as we will.

Hello and welcome to all of our new children and families in Reception. It has been wonderful getting to know the children and learning about the things that they have been doing with their families during the summer holidays. The children have settled into their new school amazingly well – we are so proud of them!
We have been spending lots of time playing and learning in our outside area; the vegetables, the sand area and the bikes are already some of the favourite areas to explore.
So far, children have been practising writing their names and drawing pictures of their families. They have taken tours around the school and even had their first PE lessons with Miss Bliss. They have really enjoyed playing with the fire engines and creating their own with junk modelling. They have also been practising their counting with the songs 5 Little Ducks and 5 Current Buns.
The next few weeks will be spent learning a little about our similarities and our differences and familiarising ourselves with the Bowmansgreen school rules, ‘Be kind, Be safe and Be Respectful.’ This week we have been learning about Elmer and why it is so important to be kind.
If you would like some ideas of games and activities that you can do with your child at home, please refer to our school website under the Learning, Phonics and Curriculum tabs.

We have reached the end of the school year and I am sure many of you are planning some exciting activities for the next 6 weeks.
Reception have had a fantastic year here at Bowmansgreen. They have worked tremendously hard during a school year that has been very unpredictable and we are all incredibly proud of them. We have spent this year creating wormeries, watching caterpillars turn into butterflies and have really enjoyed caring for baby ducks and the new school rabbits, which have had many cuddles from us all!

This week has been spent paddling in the tuff tray of water and playing with iced flowers to keep ourselves cool, as well as tasting the delicious peas the children helped to grow.  The children have spent some time reflecting on everything they have learnt and achieved this year and they have told us how happy they are, having learnt to ride bikes, read books and hunt minibeasts in our plants.

We would like to take a moment to say ‘thank you’ to you all, for your help and support this year and we hope that you enjoy the summer holidays. We are all very proud of everything the children have achieved and know that they will all go on to achieve so much more in Year 1.

Well done Reception!

We would like to start off by thanking families for the kind donations for our outside area. We have been able to create a mud kitchen which our children have loved using, to make mud pies and cakes. We have also created a brilliant small world area with our tyres, some plants and artificial grass. The children have really enjoyed using the tyres and the dinosaurs to make up stories. We are now in the process of designing a reading area, with the wonderful tree stumps that were donated.
We finished our topic of ‘Food’ by planting lots of vegetables and we are hoping that we will be able to try some produce, by the end of the year. So far they are growing well!
This half-term, our topic is ‘Let’s Pretend’ where we will be using our imagination to create stories and settings.
Some of the books we will be enjoying are ‘Not a Box,’ ‘Billy’s Bucket’ and ‘Blue Balloon.’ We are sure the children will come home with lots of interesting and imaginative versions that they have created at school, to share with you.
Thank you for all of your support.

Dear parents and carers,

Some of you may have noticed that Reception is currently in the process of developing our outdoor mud kitchen, sand area and small world area.

We are really excited to make these spaces inviting and interesting areas for our children to learn and play in. We are therefore asking for some donations of items you may have at home and are no longer using, to help us to do this. We are looking for:

  • Potted flowers or herbs
  • Children’s magazines
  • Children’s comic books
  • Bark
  • Plastic jars
  • Soil
  • Offcuts of artificial grass
  • Tree stumps (for children to sit on)
  • Silicone cake cases
  • Clothes pegs
  • Clean builders’ buckets or flexible tubs

If you are able to kindly donate any of these items, please contact the school office.

Thank you all for your help and support.

We can’t quite believe it but Reception have been in school for a whole term! They have settled fantastically into school and have all worked tremendously hard in class. Well done Reception!
Our topic this term has been Festivals and our EYFS children have learnt about Diwali, Hanukkah and have finished the term learning about the Christmas Nativity. The children created Diva lamps, learnt about the Hanukkah candle and have enjoyed decorating our classroom, making decorations and creating their own Christmas cards during these last few weeks.
Reception have also been very busy in preparation for their Nativity. They have worked so hard to learn the songs, actions and all of their words ready to perform their show. All of the children performed beautifully this week. We hope you enjoy their show as much as we did.

Reception have been at school for a whole half term!  It has been wonderful having the children in every day and to see them so excited to learn.
This term we have spent a lot of time learning about our topic: ‘Marvellous Me.’ Our next topic will be ‘Festivals’ where we will be learning about different celebrations that happen at the end of the year, including Bonfire Night, Diwali and Christmas.
All of the children’s Tapestry accounts have now been activated so please have a look at what your children have been learning at school. You can now share the exciting things you do at home, by adding them to Tapestry for us to see.
This week, your child received a book called ‘The Runaway Pea’ from the Book Trust. We hope you enjoy reading it together – we loved reading it here at school.
Have a lovely break and we will see you next half term.

EYFS Update

We are looking forward to meeting you all in person this week and for your child to begin their journey with us at Bowmansgreen.
We are excited to announce some new members of staff who have joined our EYFS team. Mrs Neo (Early Years Lead) and Mrs Walker (Teaching Assistant) will join Miss Connolly, Miss Kay and Mrs Akbolat, to give your child a great start to their first year at school.
The EYFS classroom is ready to excite and motivate your child and we are sure that they will have a smooth and positive transition to Bowmansgreen.
Please be reminded that as well as the second Stay and Play session (Friday 9.45am – 11.45am), our Parent and Carer Welcome Meeting will take place this Friday, 10.30am – 11.30am. Settle your child in the EYFS classroom and then we will direct you to the school hall, where you will meet key adults who will be involved in your child’s school life at Bowmansgreen.
Stay and Play sessions – please read the message below that has also been sent via Schoolcomms.

When you arrive at school, please buzz the green pedestrian gate at the front of the school and you will be let in. Once on site, follow the path round to the right, onto the playground, where members of staff will greet you.

Due to a recent change in government guidance regarding the full opening of schools, we would like to encourage parents to wear face coverings tomorrow and Friday, during the Play and Stay sessions. Children are now more used to seeing adults wearing face coverings in society and as we will have a high number of children, staff and parents in the same classroom, we would like to take this protective measure, to support the health and safety of all parties. We appreciate that not everyone is able to wear face coverings, for a range of reasons.

We have a supply of single use masks available for you, if you do not have your own face covering.

Thank you for your support.
