Last term in music lessons some classes were studying ‘In the Hall of the Mountain King’ by Grieg. The music tells the story of Peer Gynt entering the Troll/Mountain King’s Hall and gradually becomes faster and louder, using a lot of different orchestral instruments. The children watched films using the music, including an orchestra playing, cartoons telling the story and a ‘line rider’ with musical notes.
In studying this piece the children learned about tempo (how fast the music is), dynamics (how loud), different instruments, musical notation and how music can tell a story. The children performed this on boomwhackers and drew pictures of what the music sounded like to them.
The films below show the pictures drawn by Reception, Year 1, 2BC, 2LC, 3C, 4H and 4S.
