Meet our Governors – Karen Penn

Hi my name is Karen Penn and I am Chair of Governors at Bowmansgreen. I have 2 children who have attended school in the past and have been a governor at school for 9 years. The governing body meets roughly once per half term and is made up of parents, members of the local community, the senior members of staff at school and other members of support staff. Whilst the headteacher of a school is responsible for day-to-day management of the school, the role of the Governing Body is to provide strategic management, and to act as a “critical friend”, supporting the work of the headteacher and other staff. We attend training on a wide variety of things including budgeting, specific school policies and understanding school data amongst other things.
It is interesting to understand the budget and how school balances making the most of the money we have whilst ensuring our children are enjoying learning and that they are achieving their potential and progressing at a rate that is best suited to their individual needs. We also discuss how we can ensure all of the staff at school are trained and how we support different areas of the curriculum.
We are always interested in whether other members of the local community could join our governing body as we have a wide variety of skills required to help support school. If you or any members of your family are interested in exploring becoming a governor, please contact school who can put us in touch for a chat over coffee.
I am passionate about Bowmansgreen and love seeing the work the children produce at our Curriculum evenings and the opportunity to chat to all of the teachers.
