Maths
Everything is Maths. Everything around you is numbers. Maths gives us hope that every problem has a solution.
The Bowmansgreen Maths curriculum uses HFL Education’s Essential Maths as its basis and had been specifically designed with our pupils in mind; the sequence is coherent and allows pupils to build on concepts year on year. Learners are equipped to make connections across learning sequences so that they develop deep conceptual understanding that can be transferred and applied across a range of contexts. Pupils are empowered to tackle challenges involving a range or representations, strategies and methods. Representations of concepts and equipment are used to support understanding consistently across the school. Mixed ability groupings and collaborative learning opportunities allow all pupils to achieve their potential. Scaffolds ensure that all pupils access age related materials and can become independent learners. They have opportunities to revisit and embed knowledge and develop mathematical fluency. Mathematical language is modelled and expected during lessons and learners are supported with talking frames to allow them to become fluent in the language of maths. Learners ask relevant questions to deepen their understanding.
We aim for all pupils to:
- become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
- reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
- can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions

Our Written Calculation Progression Map outlines the progression of written formal calculation at Bowmansgreen Primary School. The progression is matched to HfL Education’s ESSENTIALmaths resources and calculation policy and the formal calculation methods outlined in the National Curriculum.
5 in 5
Have you ever tried the 5 in 5 recall activity? It's a brilliant way to boost students' retrieval and recall skills. Essentially, each day within five minutes, students challenge themselves with solving 5 previously taught mathematical concepts. This fun exercise not only encourages them to remember more but also reinforces the idea that knowing more leads to doing more. By frequently practising retrieval, they become more accurate in their answers and confident in their abilities. Who knew that a simple activity could make such a difference?
