Breakfast Club News from Mrs Stanley – 19.01.18

Next week is National Farmhouse Breakfast Week and every morning we will be having activities and encouraging the children to eat a healthy breakfast. On Friday we would like as many people as possible to join us for breakfast when our Special Farmhouse Breakfast will be bacon, eggs, beans, tomatoes and mushrooms.
Looking forward to seeing you all next week from 7.30am.

Outer Space Workshop

The Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 classes were visited on Thursday by a Little Green Alien from the Planet Saturn. Through a drama workshop they used story-telling, role-play, rhyme, song and movement to take the children on a fascinating improvisation to Outer Space.
After completing energetic astronaut training, the children boarded a spaceship (that they made themselves) and visited planets Venus, Mars and Jupiter where they’ll experience and learn about the different physical environments before landing on the Moon and rescuing Planet Earth.
We are sure that all the children enjoyed the workshops.

Headteacher’s Message – 12.01.18

Welcome back!
Your children have returned to school after the Christmas break with positive, enthusiastic attitudes and have settled down to some great learning this week.
Our school value for this half-term is Friendship. We will be talking to pupils about the qualities and characteristics that make a good friend as well as discussing the importance of friends in our lives. Friendship will be the theme of assemblies and circle time activities and staff will be on the look-out for pupils seen demonstrating this value.
Our programme of parent workshops continues on January 23rd with a focus on PSHE and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE). We would encourage parents to attend this session to find out what RSE your child is taught at different stages of their school career and what policy changes are coming into effect during the next year.
Our full programme of after school clubs starts next week. We would welcome any feedback on the new booking system so that we can further improve this process for next term.
On Tuesday January 30th we will be visited by a Team GB athlete who will be leading an inspirational assembly as well as pupil workshops. To support Team GB as well as raise money for school PE equipment, later this month, we will be running a sponsored challenge for all pupils to take part in. More information will follow next week.
Enjoy a lovely weekend.

Breakfast Club News from Mrs Stanley – 12.01.18

Happy New Year! We have had a busy first week back and enjoyed our Danish pastries this morning – thank you Tesco’s!
Week beginning Monday 22nd January is National Farmhouse Breakfast Week. Watch this space for the competitions and games we have planned all week, finishing with our Farmhouse Breakfast of bacon, scrambled eggs and beans on Friday 26th January. See you there.

Home Learning

Following on from the Parent Workshops some parents and carers have suggested that a glossary of the key English and mathematical vocabulary we use in school would help them to support their children at home.
http://www.amathsdictionaryforkids.com/ This is an online maths dictionary, which provides clear explanations and examples of key vocabulary.
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/244216/English_Glossary.pdf This is a link to the English national curriculum glossary. The glossary includes all of the technical grammatical terms used in the programmes of study for English, as well as others that might be useful. It is intended as an aid for teachers, not as the body of knowledge that should be learnt by pupils. However, it may be a useful reference tool for parents and carers to help identify the definition and seek exemplification of terms your child maybe using or be expected to use.

The Dog’s Trust

Gemma (Dogs Trust’s Education and Community Officer for Hertfordshire) visited us again this week to work with Reception up to Year 3 and to give us all an assembly on staying safe around dogs! In assembly, the whole school learnt the three steps to safely stroke a dog:
1. Ask the owner if you can
2. Let the dog sniff the back of your hand
3. Ask the owner where you should stroke the dog.
In their workshops, pupils learnt about the times it would not be safe to stroke a dog. For example, if we might disturb them, such as when they are eating or sleeping or if they are without their owner.

Sports News from Mr Sanders – 12.01.18

Boys v SASS
The boys hosted St Alban & St Stephen in the league this afternoon and won 4-0. All the goals were scored in the first half with James scoring 3 and George smashing the 4th just before half time. The lads started well and James looked dangerous as he poached all 3 goals from inside the area following good work from Ollie and Alfie. Ollie also created George’s goal with good footwork inside the area. Alfie, Isa, Jack and Freddie made sure that Taye was a spectator throughout the whole first half.
The 2nd half was slightly different as SASS finally woke up and put more pressure on the Bowmansgreen defenders. Tommy had to work hard to break up the attacks from the centre of midfield and Taye was alert with his positioning and handling as SASS created far more than they had in the first half. Final Score Bowmansgreen 4-0 SASS
Team Jack, Taye, George, Freddie, Alfie, Tommy, James, Ollie & Isa
