Early Years News from Miss Robbins – 23.02.18

This week
We have been talking about washing and exercise. We talked about our half term week, drawing pictures of what we’d been up to and writing sentences about our pictures. We have enjoyed using our ‘Gym’ role play area doing lots of different exercises. We have been adding all sorts of items including washing, people, actions, sounds and natural resources and using a number line to help us work out the answer. We have really enjoyed using our newly resourced creative area using some of the items donated from you (please keep them coming!).
Next week
Next week is ‘Book Week’ and we are lucky enough to be having the author of ‘Dinosaur Roar’, Paul Stickland, visiting to work with the children. All our work will be based around this book and therefore about Dinosaurs. Our maths work will focus on subtraction next week. Don’t forget that Thursday is World Book Day and we will be dressing up as book characters on that day.
Independence
All the children in Reception are now independent in organising themselves at school and those few who still need a little help have the Reception adults to support them. They do not need to be brought into the classroom so please say goodbye at the door. There is an adult on each door if you need to pass on a message. We still have some parents who regularly bring their children into the classroom and they don’t need to. Thanks
P.E.
Some children have lost items from their P.E. kits as the children are now changing in school. Frequently the children accidentally pick up another child’s clothes and put them in their P.E. bag. Can you please check your child’s bag regularly and if they have brought home another child’s kit please bring it back into school.

Headteacher’s Message – 9.02.18

Pupils at Bowmansgreen love maths! Pupils have worked so hard this half-term and have thoroughly enjoyed the fun and challenge of their maths and home learning activities focusing on pattern. It was great to see so many of you at yesterday’s curriculum evening, celebrating your children’s learning in maths. It is always lovely to see pupils proudly sharing work with parents and we appreciate the turn-out and support for these events.
I am aware that there were significant problems with parking and traffic during last Friday’s school disco. The school and FOBS are thinking together to see how we can help alleviate these pressures on drivers, local residents and pedestrians. I have previously sought legal advice as to how far the school can or should be involved in parking and traffic issues and the advice is very clear – these are not school staff responsibilities and situations can actually become more inflamed if we try to intervene or ‘police’ such situations. We have to trust that parents will park and drive sensibly. We can, of course, help alleviate the pressure in other ways such as looking at opening the rear gate or not holding two discos on the same evening. Any changes will be in place for the next disco.
In recent months, schools have been asked to put into place procedures to quickly move pupils and staff away from an identified risk or unsafe situation. Such practice is sometimes referred to as ‘lockdown’ although this is not a term that we have yet introduced to pupils. A lockdown procedure is a standard health and safety procedure, similar to a fire drill. Although the need for such action is very unlikely, we want to ensure that should it arise, we have a whole school, sensible and proportionate response that all pupils and staff are familiar and confident with. This week, we practised this procedure, leaving the playground quickly and sensibly and returning to our classrooms. We will continue to formulate our whole school plan and present parents with our final policy next half term.
Our next parent workshop is the first Tuesday back (Feb 20th) and will be led by the NSPCC. This session is part of a wider programme called ‘Speak out. Stay safe.’ and is linked to the assembly and pupil workshops that the NSPCC will be delivering at Bowmansgreen. I would encourage all parents to attend this workshop which is aimed at helping our children to keep themselves and each other safe.
Enjoy a lovely half-term.

Thank you to everyone who came along to our Maths Curriculum Evening last night. We hope you enjoyed seeing the work your children have produced, which showed off their Maths knowledge and skills. It was great to see parents and children having a go at the different interactive adventures.

Boys B v Margaret Wix
The Boys B team made the short trip to play Margaret Wix in a league match on Wednesday but it proved to be a tough test as Margaret Wix came out the stronger side as they won 4-0.
The game wasn’t without chances for the Bowmansgreen team but once again, they found the opposition keeper in great form. Conceding three goals in the first half of play wasn’t ideal but a more determined showing during the 2nd half was encouraging. Szymon and Zeph showed the way with hard working performances but in the end Margaret Wix proved too strong as the final whistle blew.

Boys A v SASS
The boys A team unfortunately bowed out of the St Albans Cup yesterday as they lost 2-0 against a strong Skyswood side. The first goal was fairly harsh as an indirect free kick was awarded to Skyswood. The resulting shot ended up hammered into the back of the net. This woke up the Bowmansgreen boys and Ollie, Tommy and James looked lively and nearly equalised just before half time, with James using his pace to go past the defender and shooting just wide. The defensive unit of Alfie, Jack and Freddie were stretched for the rest of the half but stood up to the task.
The 2nd half was a spirited performance as Skyswood looked to double the advantage and Bowmansgreen tried to get on level terms. George came on and was solid in the tackle and pushed forward later in the game to put pressure on the opposition defence. The game ebbed one way then the other but it was Skyswood who got the all-important 2nd goal with only two minutes remaining.
Overall it was a hard working performance from Bowmansgreen but it was Skyswood who were the stronger team but certainly progress has been made in the last few matches.

Early Years News from Miss Robbins 9.02.18

This Week
We have been learning about different fruits. We have read the story of ‘Oliver’s Fruit Salad’ and designed our own fruit salads using the ipads. We tasted different fruits and cut them up to put in a fruit salad. We have learnt different ways we can sort, group and categorise and how we can record this simply. Thank you for staying to do maths activities on Tuesday morning. We hope the cards help to explain the game/activity but if you’re unsure please ask. It was lovely to see you at the curriculum evening yesterday and we hope you enjoyed sharing your children’s work on pattern.
After Half Term
We will continue learning about how to keep healthy with more of a focus on exercise and hygiene. We will be using the text Mrs Mopple’s Washing Line. We will also be looking at non-fiction and writing captions and labels on posters and signs about keeping healthy. We will be using a washing line to add, subtract, pair, and count in 2’s/5’s.
Well Being
As part of the children’s well-being it is important that we have clean toilets for every child to use. We have noticed that some children are having trouble aiming and therefore making the toilet very messy for the next child. We do regularly check the toilets and clean any mess but if you know your child is struggling please speak to us so we can offer our advice and support.
Resources
Thank you for the donations you have brought in this week. This has really inspired the children and they have used them to create some great work. Please keep collecting! We would also be grateful for any donations of unused diaries, notebooks or post-it notes and if you are throwing out coloured stones/pebbles, the sort you have in vases or decorations we would love them too.
Have a great half term but don’t forget to keep reading (5 times a week) and practising the phonics cards.
