6HW – Our visit to Airbus Foundation Discovery Space

On Tuesday 28th November we went to AIRBUS (Stevenage). When we arrived, we met a lady called Shell and she told us about what they do at Airbus. The first thing we did was explore their science room where there were many different things and experiments to try.
The things I tried were the lightning ball (plasma globe) and the centrifuge spinner. After that, we met an engineer called David who was helping to construct the Exo Mars Rover. He talked to us and answered our questions about the robot (which is probably going to be launched around the year 2020) and Mars itself. David also showed us the yard where they test the robots; it is exactly like the surface of Mars. He also told us about the prototypes: Bridget, Bradley, Bruno and Brian. We learnt that Mars has two moons: Phobos (Greek god of fear) and Deimos (Greek god of terror).
Next, we made electric buzzer games. We used polystyrene, bendy wire, batteries, red or black insulated wire, and lots of tape! It was very difficult. The aim was to get the wire wand through the bendy wire track without making it buzz.
When that was over, Shell (the ‘Queen of Science’) showed us the most amazing light demonstration ever! The lights were turned off. Then we split light through a triangular prism and looked at transparent, opaque and translucent shapes. We saw that light travels in a straight line by blowing talcum powder in the path of a laser light. Then she had three lamps; one blue, one red and one green. Lights don’t mix like you think they do; if you mix coloured lights, they all turn white. We also looked at UV light and interestingly, bees see the world in UV so they know whether a plant has pollen in it.
In conclusion, we had a very fun-packed day and if you get a chance, we recommend going to AIRBUS. We learned so much!

Sports News from Mr Sanders 07.12.17

Bowmansgreen Girls v Wheatfields
The girls made the journey to play Wheatfields in the Wix 7 a side, knowing that it was going to be a tough assignment as Wheatfields had won all the games they had played this season so far. The game started well for the girls as great work from first Laila, then Mia, set up Lacie who finished brilliantly from a tight angle. 1-0 up after six minutes. The game was tight and end to end as two very good sides went head to head. Bowmansgreen defended superbly through Marilena, Lucy, Kyeesha and Sofia to keep the outstanding Wheatfields forward restricted to limited chances.
The second half was also very tough, Bowmansgreen were not creating too many chances as they looked to hold onto the lead. Wheatfields was dominating possession and territory, and both Marilena and Emily had to be alert to keep the score 1-0, clearing two chances off the line. Laila and Lily looked dangerous on the counter attack and was the perfect outlet who relieved pressure countless times. There were 30 seconds left when, for the first time, the Wheatfields forward had a clear sight of goal and made no mistake. A late equaliser! Extra time started and Wheatfields went ahead for the first time in the 2nd half with a decent finish at the far post. Mia, playing her last game for the school before moving away, forced a great save from the Wheatfields keeper with just seconds left. The Bowmansgreen girls were superb against strong opposition, the toughest match of the season and they showed great character and resilience and this game proved how good the girls are and how far they have come.
Squad – Emily, Kyeesha, Marilena, Sofia, Mia, Laila, Lily, Lacie, Lucy.
Bowmansgreen v St Peters
A joint year 4/5 side hosted St Peters in a friendly match on Wednesday. The game started well for Bowmansgreen as Laila looked dangerous on the right side of midfield, forcing the St Peters keeper to save smartly at the near post early on. With players being in different positions as an experiment, it was St Peters who stung a surprise and opened the scoring, and the forward finishing well when one on one with Archie. Despite hitting the post through James, it took 15 minutes for Bowmansgreen to equalise. Laila created herself some space on the edge of the area and fired into the bottom corner.
Once this goal went in, Bowmansgreen again started to dominate but despite having eight shots in short succession, just couldn’t find a way past the keeper. Archie had to be alert to make a fine save when called upon with four minutes to go, even though he hadn’t touched the ball for ten minutes. Freddie, George and Tommy looked solid and the two year 4s, Luca and Jason, worked hard and fitted into the side perfectly. The winning goal came from the foot of Ollie. A through ball from James, who had held off the challenge of the defender, was taken in his stride and finished well past the advancing keeper. A good performance and result.
Squad – Archie, Freddie, George, Tommy, Ollie, James, Laila, Jason and Luca.

Breakfast Club News from Mrs Stanley – 7.12.17

As we countdown to our Festive Break we hope you have enjoyed all the different activities and games. Just to let you know our Special Friday Breakfast next Friday will be sausages, scrambled eggs and beans. Please join us in your Christmas Jumpers! Have a lovely long weekend and see you on Monday 7.30am.

School Choir

The choir have been super busy practicing for Christmas. They performed four songs at the Christmas fair where they looked and sounded fabulous. On Tuesday, they went along to the St Albans Abbey and joined together with the St Albans Primary School Music Association at their annual Carol Concert. The Abbey was packed with children and grown-ups and it felt very festive. A special mention to Mara (Y5) and Bianca (Y6) for performing their parts so well in front of so many people and well done to the whole choir for singing so beautifully. Thank you to those parents who came along to support the children on both occasions.
The KS1 music club performed four songs at the Christmas fair on Saturday. Not only did they look fantastic, but they sounded brilliant too. Well done to all those who came and thank you to their families for their support.

Travelling Book Shop

This week we hosted a Travelling Book fair after school, in Year 1. You purchased £250 worth of books which has meant that the school has been able to stock up on some new books for the class book corners. Thank you to Miss Brennan, Miss Hicks and Mrs Pratchett for running the fair over the three days.

Winter Wonderland

Thank you to everyone who came along last Saturday – we hope you enjoyed the day and had a fantastic time. We are still counting the money so will let you know what we’ve raised next week. Amy Turner who was selling the wreaths in aid of Action for Children raised a fantastic £280 at the fair.
Thank you to everyone who came along and bought one from her.

Early Years News from Miss Robbins – 07.12.17

This week
We have performed our Christmas concert to an audience three times! Our first was on Monday, our dress rehearsal to the rest of the school and then twice to family and friends. The children looked fantastic in their costumes, remembered their parts well and enjoyed performing. Thank you to all of you who supported us by providing costumes and watching the play, we hope it gave you a little bit of a Christmas sparkle! In the classroom, we have been learning about the traditional tale ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ as it is part of our Christmas play. We made Big Bad Wolf wanted posters and tried to retell the story from memory. We have also learnt about Christmas traditions eg- putting up a Christmas tree and advent calendars. If you have any particular family traditions it would be great if you could share these on Tapestry.
Next week
We will be focusing on Christmas including the story of ‘The First Christmas’ and continuing with Christmas traditions eg – making decorations, writing Christmas cards and Father Christmas filling children’s stockings. We have several events next week to attend as well, including Christmas dinner on Wednesday, a Christmas panto to watch on Thursday afternoon and Friday is Christmas Jumper day and class Christmas party afternoon…phew what a busy week!

Headteacher’s Message – 01.02.17

The Christmas season is well and truly open!
This afternoon, the whole school walked down to St Peter’s church to enjoy a Christingle service led by Y6. It was a really lovely occasion and as always, our pupils did the school, their parents and – most importantly – themselves very proud. They sang their hearts out and the narrators and actors were super! Thank you to Mrs Flatt for organising the service and ensuring such polished singing and acting from the pupils. Thank you also to all parents who volunteered and helped to walk pupils down to the church – we could not have done it without you!
Last week, Herts County Council carried out a ‘criteria check’ to see if a school crossing patrol for Bowmansgreen was deemed necessary. The check gave a measure of how busy the site is, and an indicator of the ‘level of road safety risk to the children.’ Regrettably, we have been informed that we did not meet the criteria for HCC to fund a crossing patrol.
Please be reminded that we are not able to allow parents into the school building unaccompanied, for the safety
and protection of all pupils and staff. If parents wish to give messages to teachers, pupils or the school office,
check lost property or look for lunch boxes, staff are always happy to help but may direct you to the office via
the front entrance if they cannot accompany you at that time.
On Tuesday, we are hosting our next parent workshop which will focus on parent wellbeing and information
about support and services in the local community. We have two visitors – Debbie Stewart and Adrian Woods –
who will be leading this workshop which is open to all parents. This is our last-workshop-but-one before the
Christmas break and it would be great to see you there.
Please see the attached letters regarding after-school clubs and the Key Stage One Nativity performance.
The school hall is currently being transformed… I look forward to seeing as many of you at our Winter Wonderland tomorrow as possible. It promises to be a Winter Wonderland – Saturday 11.30 – 3.00 fantastic day!

The Dog's Trust visit with Year 6

Gemma, The Dogs’ Trust Education and Community Officer for Hertfordshire, came to visit Year 6 this week!
Gemma delivered workshops on “Dogs in War”. Year 6 learnt about how owners of pet dogs struggled during the war because of difficulties: food rationing made food for dogs scarce; air raid shelters did not allow dogs inside; and when families were evacuated they had to leave their dog behind.
Year 6 also learned about ways they could help their dogs today, including: having a microchip to help their dog get back home if they are lost; providing a safe place for dogs to go to when they are scared, for example during fireworks.
We are looking forward to welcoming them back in January when they will be coming in to visit KS1.
