Early Years News from Miss Robbins – 02.02.18

This week
We have been learning about different vegetables, some of which we already knew and some we didn’t. We discovered that if we wanted chips we had to have potatoes! We have been reading sentences about “Oliver’s Vegetables”, trying to remember our ‘reading strategies’ that help us. We have done all sorts of pattern making including printing with vegetables, sound patterns and body patterns. To find out more about this, please come to the curriculum evening on Thursday next week.
Next week
We will continue learning about how to keep healthy using the book ‘Oliver’s Fruit Salad’. We will be reading a recipe to make a fruit salad and tasting different fruits. In maths we will be sorting and categorising. We will also be finishing our pattern work ready for the curriculum evening.
Fruit Salad
We will be making a fruit salad on Thursday and Friday next week. We will be providing some of the fruit but would be grateful if you could send your child in with one piece of fruit to add to this so that we have more to go round.
Resources
We are always looking for and collecting paper. This is quite an expensive resource and we are grateful for any donations. Scrap paper, old wrapping paper, left over wall paper, old used birthday cards (we only use the front) and anything else you can think of! Thank you.

Impressive Homework
Zoha and Manav have really impressed us with their creative home learning this week. They have also tried exceptionally hard with their finger spaces and letter formation in their writing.

Headteacher’s Message – 26.01.18

What a busy week we have had!
On Monday, we hosted a Setpoint maths workshop for pupils from Bowmansgreen and local schools, with a focus on problem solving. Throughout the day, pupils from years 3 and 4 (Haroon, Jason, Harry & Jed) had fun working together, in the hall, to solve some very tricky maths challenges.
Meanwhile, in the gym something spectacular took place! Bowmansgreen was the launch school for the new ‘View From Space To Earth’ challenge run by AlohaTri and the Triathlon Trust. Throughout the day, pupils and staff ran and cycled their way to travelling 1097km! Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day and rose to the challenge. Thank you to Rav Dighe and Miss Brennan for making this happen – it was a fantastic day!
This week, Mrs Stanley and the breakfast club staff have been working in overdrive to prepare a range of breakfasts to support national Farmhouse Breakfast Week, including this morning’s special hot breakfast of bacon, sausage, egg, beans, tomatoes and mushrooms – which was delicious! The breakfast club at Bowmansgreen is very popular and provides a fantastic start to the day for our pupils, parents and staff.
Tuesday’s parent workshop focused on Relationships and Sex Education. Thank you to all parents who attended and – as always – we value your support and feedback. We appreciate that many of you cannot attend the Tuesday morning sessions due to work commitments and we encourage you to access the slides and notes so that you don’t miss out. The slides from the last two workshops are attached to this newsletter and will be available on the school website (via the ‘Parents’ tab) from Monday.
To support National Careers Week (March 5th – 9th) we will be running a number of activities and events to inform, inspire and motivate pupils about the vast range of jobs and careers they have to choose from. We welcome support and involvement from parents and would like to hear from anyone who would be able to spare some time during this week, to run a workshop or Q&A session about their career, especially if you have a particularly unusual or exciting job. Please contact the school office if you would be able to spare some time.
Have a lovely weekend.

Breakfast Club News from Mrs Stanley – 26.01.18

What a wonderful week we have had celebrating “National Farmhouse Breakfast Week”. Children have won prizes of cereal and porridge all week, for effort put into different activities.
Today saw our Prize Draw to win Eggs, Bacon and Cereals! The children enjoyed learning about different cereals that grow and also that the majority of our breakfast ingredients are produced by farmers, such as bacon, eggs, milk and yogurt.
Thank you to all our special guests invited today and for your continued support of Breakfast Club. Thanks again to Tesco for the lovely bread and cereals this week.
Our next “Themed Week” is “Pancakes and Valentines”.
See you on Monday from 7.30am.

Team GB Athlete Marilyn Okoro Visit – Tuesday 30th January

We are looking forward to meeting Team GB athlete Marilyn Okoro on Tuesday. Marilyn will be taking an assembly and workshops with the children. The workshops will focus on healthy eating, growth mind-set and determination and there will be a question and answer session.
After Marilyn‘s visit, Mr Sanders and Mr Cropper will be organising a “ Circuit Challenge ” involving the whole school.
This will comprise of:

  • Killers (short burst of sprinting)
  • Leg drives
  • Burpees
  • Press ups
  • Triceps dips
  • Sit ups
  • Star jumps

Each aspect of the circuit will last for one minute and their score on each activity will be recorded. The circuits will take place during their PE lessons in the week after Marilyn’s visit.
Your child has brought home a sponsor form to participate in this event to help raise money in support of Team GB Athletes and for sports equipment for the school. All children who raise money will receive a prize, depending upon how much sponsorship money they collect.
Please could all money be returned to school by Wednesday 7th February. Thank you.

Sports News from Mr Sanders

The Boys B team hosted Skyswood in the B league on Thursday in their first game of 2018. With the pitch in superb condition, especially after the recent rain, it was perfect for passing football. The Bowmansgreen lads started the game superbly and looked to be in total control, as Archie (the goal keeper) was a spectator for the first 10 minutes, only being called into action once in the opening 15 minutes. With Owen and Hugo solid defensively and the work rate of Zak, Adam and Evan plus the pace of Youcef and Tobi up front, it was a superb game to watch for Bowmansgreen.
Youcef got in behind the Skyswood defence more than once and only recovering tackles prevented him getting his shots away. It was one of these runs that created the clearest opportunity, as he was fouled in the penalty area and the penalty was given. The opening goal wasn’t to be, as Owen’s shot was saved smartly by the keeper. The score at the half time break was still 0-0 and the team went back out full of hope and confidence.
That changed after 5 minutes as Skyswood scored 3 goals in 3 minutes and that changed the complexion of the game. Try as they might, the goal that Bowmansgreen deserved just wouldn’t come as the keeper kept several shots at bay and goalmouth scrambles were also cleared without any luck.
Final score Bowmansgreen 0-3 Skyswood
Squad Archie, Owen, Hugo. Adam, Zak, Evan, Youcef & Tobi.
