Road Safety Week – 20-26 November 2017

Road accidents remain one of the biggest causes of death and serious injury among children and young people, and dangerous roads also have a major impact on their ability to walk, cycle and live healthy active lifestyles. This makes it so important to develop everyone’s awareness of the risks and also how the situation can be improved by individuals and communities now and in the future.
This year the main theme is ‘Speed Down, Save Lives’.
Vehicle speed has been identified as a key risk factor in road traffic injuries, influencing both the risk of a road crash as well as the severity of the injuries that result from crashes. An increase in the average speed of 1m/h typically results in a 3% higher risk of a crash involving injury, with a 4–5% increase for crashes that result in fatalities (World Health Organisation).
